SPORTS BUILDING OF THE FUTURE IN PUCONCI

Prof. Brian Cody, Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Ampenberger, Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Karitnig, Dipl.-Ing. Ingomar Platzer

The Institute for Buildings and Energy at Graz University of Technology was commissioned to conduct a pilot study to investigate how an energy-efficient sports facility of the 21st century should be designed. The study was used as a planning aid for the subsequent architectural competition for an energy-efficient triple sports hall in the municipality of Puconci in the north-east of Slovenia. In addition to sports lessons at the school, the new facility was also to serve as a regional sports centre for the numerous sports practiced there in the municipality. This pilot project was to show the possibilities for energy-efficient sports facility construction through its pioneering character. The development of the energetic concept was based on an analytical process of optimizing a virtual model. Investigations of the model by dynamic-thermal simulations, daylight simulations and CFD simulations were carried out. Besides the achievement of a high energetic performance, novel design possibilities were shown. An evaluation of the overall energy efficiency is carried out by determining the energy demand while considering comfort criteria.
