The work deals with a design task, advertised by the Institute for Buildings and Energy, namely the conceptual design of a revolvable and highly configurable testing site for the research on, and the development of, efficient but most of all effective spatial units, mainly - but not only - in terms of their energetic performance.

A suitable location was found above the garden-wing’s rooftop of the so-called “Alte Technik“, Graz University of Technology’s headquarter in Rechbauerstraße 12, among others home of the Faculty of Architecture and most of its institutes.

The draft proposes the replacement of the existing but gone out of use, revolvable solar observatory, by an open constructive framework, which is mounted on ball bearings, and which offers the required variability regarding size and arrangement of the experi- mental spaces, the interchangeability of their façades and their building service equipment.
