Participation in the International Conference on Electrolysis – ICE 2025, held in Freiburg, Germany from 23rd – 29th of August.
The international electrolysis community gathered in Freiburg, Germany, to present their research and discuss the latest innovation and industrial applications in water electrolysis. 329 participants from 30 countries attended the conference, which featured over 200 presentations, including oral and poster presentations, invited talks, and keynote speeches. Additionally, the program included workshops, and excursions to industrial and research sites.
Professor Merit Bodner was invited as a panellist in the workshop “Career paths in hydrogen” held on the Fraunhofer ISE building on Sunday 23rd. The workshop offered an engaging, interactive forum tailored for early-career researchers, featuring insights from three distinguished professionals.
PhD student Lukas Roessler Escudero, presented their work “Old but gold: Evaluation of gold as catalyst for low-CRM SO2 electrolysis” in the plenary session on the second day of the conference. The talk showcased the results of utilising gold as an alternative, non-CRM material for sulphur depolarised electrolysis, achieving current densities of > 650 mA/cm2 at 1.2 V while reducing the CRM utilisation for electrolysis by more than 60% compared to state of the art alternatives.
Presented in the form of a poster with the title “Durability Investigation for PEM Water Electrolysis Cells”, the group’s work carried out under the IEA Advanced Fuel Cells Technology Collaboration Programme Task 30 was showcased.
