Prof. Fernando Diego Carazo from National University of San Juan / Head of Materials Laboratory at IMA-FI-UNSJ - Argentinia will held the 4th lecture in Topics in Metals and Ceramics.

Course description

The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with a selected set of physically based crystalplasticity theory in order to understand and set up various modeling considering plastic deformation of metals at the meso-scale. Along the course the students will learn about the mathematical basis of kinematics of crystalline deformation, crystal plasticity criterion, hardening rules for crystalline slip, constitutive laws for elastic-plastic crystals and polycrystal deformation models. The theory, and computational and analytical problems solved will be applied to solve a selected cases of plastic deformation of metals and alloys with diff erent crystal structure and initial texture, the selection of the slip system, a constitutive strain hardening law and elastic-plastic constitutive law using mean field models and/or commercial fi nite element programs.

Prof. Herman Nied - Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Lehigh University, USA will held the 1st lecture Selected Topics

Course description:

 

The course focuses on the determination of residual stresses in welded and plastically formed structures and the related fatigue and fracture behavior in such manufactured components. After a review of the basic mechanics and material issues, modern computational techniques used for the prediction of residual stresses and distortion in forming and fusion metal deposition processes such as: gas metal arc welding, laser welding, wire arc additive manufacture, will be examined. The mechanics of fatigue and fracture in formed, welded and diffusion bonded load-bearing structures will be developed with specific examples obtained from selected failure case histories. Advanced fracture mechanics computational tools will be introduced and made available to the students for the simulation of 3D crack growth behavior in structures subjected to combined residual stresses, external alternating loads, thermal stresses, and mechanical shock.
