The joint project Zinc/air redox flow battery with novel electrolytes for the storage of renewable energy and grid stabilisation with the partners Institute of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Technology, VARTA Micro Innovation GmbH, and TSR-KAT GmbH funded by the Energie- und Klimafonds of the Austrian Government is aimed at a significant improvement of the cycle stability, power and energy density of the low-cost and environmentally friendly zinc/air redox flow battery.

Morphologies of electrodeposited zinc.

One approach is based on pulsed charging current for additive-free alkaline zincate electrolytes and the other on the development of a novel pH neutral electrolyte. This shall result in zinc deposits with a morphology suitable for flowing electrolytes at current densities of at least 50 mA/cm² even for low zinc concentrations. The results will bring this technology closer to a commercial development.
