Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM)

We are equipped with a Leica TCS SPE laser scanning confocal microscope, able to sequentially analyze up to 8 channels for fluorescent light plus one transmitted-light channel. The microscope includes also a Leica DFC360FX camera for recording non-confocal, filter based fluorescent light.

The confocal images can be analyzed and used for 3D reconstructions. For this purpose, we use the software Imaris (version 7.0, Bitplane, Zurich), installed on a HP xw6600 workstation, with 16 GB of virtual memory, 2 quad-core processors (each 2,5 GHz) and the graphic board ATI Radeon HD4870 X2. We establish model systems for studying plant-associated bacteria and fungi, their beneficial effects on the plant growth and their efficiency in the biocontrol of plant pathogens.

We established protocols for detection of microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) using Head-Space Solid Phase Microextraction (HS-SPME) strategies.
