PROJECT RESEARCHER IN DATA ANALYSIS AND BIBLIOMETRICS

The Institute for Interactive Systems and Data Science at Graz University of Technology has an open position, available from 1st April 2019 for an initial fixed-term of 1.5 years, for a:

PROJECT RESEARCHER IN DATA ANALYSIS AND BIBLIOMETRICS (PRAE-DOC)

Full Time (40 hours/week)

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious candidate with a strong academic background in information science, bibliometrics, data science, statistics or a cognate discipline. Based in the Open and Reproducible Research Group (ORRG), the successful applicant will assist in the analysis and implementation of Open Science practices, policies and tools. Led by Dr. Tony Ross-Hellauer, ORRG is a newly-formed, interdisciplinary group specialising in Open Science within the Institute for Interactive Systems and Data Science at TU Graz. The position is open as prae-doc; the opportunity to pursue a PhD will be supported.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conventional bibliometric and scientometric analyses and inclusion of alternative and innovative approaches to research on impact and efficacy in science
  • Design, operationalization, implementation and evaluation of studies using conventional and alternative metrics in the science system
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative studies on the development of Open Science and scholarly communications, including trend and usage analysis
  • Participation in the strategic development and implementation of TU Graz research information services, including repository services
  • Collaboration with the University Rectorate and Library to analyse existing research services, identify opportunities within the open science environment and make recommendations for improvements and to launch new services/research infrastructures
  • Participation in the conception and implementation of third-party funded projects
  • Creation of scientific publications which raise the profile of the TU Graz in these areas
  • Possibility to pursue a PhD in the fields of Open Science / Research Data Management

Required skills and experience

  • Completed academic studies (masters or diploma)
  • Proven analytical handling of process and object data
  • Knowledge and proven experience in statistics, bibliometrics, or data visualization
  • Good organizational skills, high communication and team skills as well as excellent command of spoken and written English

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience with Open Science and/or Research Data Management
  • Knowledge of publication and/or data repositories
  • Practical experience with processes and infrastructures of scholarly communications
  • Experience with data extraction and analysis (e.g., Python, R)
  • Good command of spoken and written German

Job Grading in Accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement: B1 Grundstufe (Praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade. The gross salary for this position amounts to a minimum of € 2794,60/month, 14x per year).

PROJECT RESEARCHER IN DATA STEWARDSHIP (POST- OR PRAE-DOC)

Full Time (40 hours/week)

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious candidate with a strong background in life sciences, computer science, data science or a cognate discipline. Based in the Open and Reproducible Research Group (ORRG) at the TU Graz, the successful applicant will undertake hands-on research into emergent services, policies and practices for data stewardship. Led by Dr. Tony Ross-Hellauer, ORRG is a newly-formed, interdisciplinary group specialising in Open Science within the Institute for Interactive Systems and Data Science at TU Graz. The position is open as either post-doc or prae-doc; if the latter, the opportunity to pursue a PhD will be supported.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conception and development of innovative services and policies for Research Data Management
  • Primary research into requirements and tools for machine-actionable data management plans
  • Liaison with researchers to assess their data needs and embed research data management into working practices
  • Cover all aspects of research data management, including its organisation, description, preservation, and discoverability
  • Provide training, guidance and advocacy for research data management and open research
  • Participation in the conception and implementation of third-party funded projects
  • Create scientific publications which contribute to the theory and development of data stewardship and data management planning, and raise the profile of the TU Graz in these areas

Required skills and experience

  • Completed academic studies (masters or diploma) in Life Sciences, Computer Science, or a related subject
  • Good knowledge of research data management policies and practices, as well as a broad understanding of how research operates and how data and software underpins reproducible research.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, able to speak not only with researchers, but also with other support staff.
  • Very good written and spoken English and German language skills

Desirable skills and experience

  • Ph.D. in Life Sciences, Computer Science, or a related subject
  • Experience with Open Science
  • Bioinformatics programming experience
  • Knowledge of semantic indexing, linking data technologies and methodologies
  • Experience with software and languages for data extraction and analysis (e.g., Python, R)
  • Record of impactful scientific publications in line with career-stage.

Job Grading in Accordance with Collective Bargaining Agreement: B1 (post-doc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade. The gross salary for this position amounts to a minimum of € 3711,10/month, 14x per year. B1 Grundstufe (prae-doc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade. The gross salary for this position amounts to a minimum of € 2794,60/month, 14x per year).
