Application potentials of nanoporous metals in biocatalysis

This project aims at exploring the potentials of nanoporous made from noble metals as solid supports for biocatalytic reactions and production of (bio-)sensors. In cooperation between the Institute of Materials Physics and the Institute of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering nanoporous metals are produced by dealloying and used as carrier for the oriented immobilization of selected enzymes with the focus on oxidoreductases. The large surface area and binding capacity of these self-supporting “nano-sponges” with controllable pore-sizes enables a strong and selective binding of biomolecules which offers new possibilities for enzymatic redox reactions.
