Digitalisation

Digitisation is changing the services offered by universities and the basic teaching, research and administration processes that universities follow, as well as the ways in which social changes can be addressed. Considering these aspects, how can TU Graz stand out from other universities? How can Styria as a centre of scientific innovation be further developed? Which performance models should be offered in the future? Which framework conditions need to be adapted? Where does digitalisation truly make sense?

TU Graz has made a firm commitment to proactively shape the digital transformation. By establishing its digitalisation policy, TU Graz has created a strategic framework that enables it to address digitalisation and all of the changes it brings. You can find the latest news about digitalisation at TU Graz at "Digital TU Graz: News" (in German).

The TU Graz digital agenda is accompanied by programme coordination and overarching transformation management, comprising four fields of action:

Basic goals of digitalisation

The TU Graz ...

... increases its competitive capacity in research and teaching.

... is an attractive partner for students, employees, and cooperation partners from the business, science, and national and regional administration sectors.

... is a first-class educational institution where qualified and the most suitable people choose to study.

TU Graz Digitalisation Policy

In the spring of 2018, TU Graz became the first Austrian university to adopt a digitalisation policy that defines a strategic framework for addressing the challenges posed by digitalisation and the many accompanying changes. The new content-based orientation and emphasis is the result of a multi-faceted, decisive process that took place between May 2017 and February 2018. All TU Graz employees, internal and external experts, and central stakeholders were invited to participate in this process.

The TU "digital agenda" states: Digitalisation must be beneficial. The sustainability of process decisions and the needs of people, therefore, are the basis of all considerations. TU Graz uses the digital transformation to increase the ways it can act and perform in four central fields of action: teaching, research, administration and third mission.

Teaching Field of Action

Digitalisation in teaching comprises both supporting teaching and teaching digitalisation. Digital applications can be used to help manage the increasing student numbers. In addition to oral examinations, modern electronic examination methods simplify the organisation of studies. Digital technologies can meaningfully combine face-to-face and virtual teaching. This results in the creation of modular teaching and learning content, which is increasingly freely accessible via the corresponding IT infrastructures. In addition, TU Graz is offering new content, new courses, and new degree programmes to familiarise students with fundamental aspects of digitalisation and computer science as well as with their social impact.

Research Field of Action

Researchers are provided with a competitive working environment and supported while building their profile and increasing their international visibility. Standardised and efficient data management makes data sustainably available and reusable. The overall goal: TU Graz wants to increase research effectiveness and impact!

Third Mission Field of Action

TU Graz is keenly aware of its responsibility to society. It would like to fulfil a broader transfer function and further develop the "university performance model". To do so, new paths will be evaluated: Technology-supported educational offers can attract new target groups and increase the number of graduates for the location in subject areas that are critical for success. As part of its mission to provide public education, TU Graz increases the educational opportunities of society.

Administration Field of Action

Processes and information flows are simplified, and processes become more comprehensible, transparent, and efficient. All datasets are unified in an overall architecture (Data Only Once), data quality is increased, and reporting is simplified. Employees will be offered a flexible workplace with user-friendly, fully digitalised administrative and work processes.

digital university hub

The digital university hub (DUH) is an inter-university service and cooperation platform that has been developed to guide Austria's universities into a digital future. DUH offers freely available tools, methods, and open-source software solutions that can be used to support digital transformation processes and change management at universities. The platform creates a space to make inter-university initiatives visible, thus triggering impulses that encourage innovation. Under the motto "Change connects", interested university employees can now join the DUH network and become part of a diverse inter-university knowledge community.

Transformation management

TU Graz is meeting the challenges posed by digitalisation by following a structured transformation process. A holistic approach toward this process is being taken, as digitalisation affects TU Graz as a whole as well as all individual employees and students. Different dimensions that connect the four fields of action, including strategy, structure, culture, governance, and new working worlds, are taken into account, and particularly in the area of transformation management. The digital transformation can only succeed if all stakeholders are involved in the process, meaning that they are involved in an open discourse and the change.
