Research Field of Action

In research, digitalisation offers a great opportunity to develop new dissemination methods and efficient research data management strategies based on open science principles. The latter also includes a set of rules for accessing the collected scientific data. Thus, specific implementation projects related to the "Digital TU Graz" serve as a basis for competitive research and a starting point for taking new scientific approaches.

The core project in the research field of action is FAIR Data Austria, which will run until the end of 2022. TU Graz is working on this project jointly with the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Vienna. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research.

FAIR Data Austria

The project promotes cooperation between Austrian universities, helping them to develop clear and robust services that can be used with research data and supporting the sustainable implementation of the European Open Science Cloud. The FAIR data principles play an essential role: Data should be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.

In order to perform research data management (FDM) in accordance with the FAIR principles, the entire life cycle of research data must be supported, ranging from data generation to archiving, by providing access to expertise and the corresponding tools. Therefore, the project focuses firstly on achieving an integrated FDM; TU Graz adopted a corresponding policy for its researchers at the end of 2019. Secondly, repositories for data, publications, and other research results are being established. And thirdly, training and support services to ensure efficient FDM are being developed.

Research Data Management at TU Graz

At rdm.tugraz.at, Research Data Management (RDM) is the alpha and omega. While general information must be provided about RDM and the FAIR data principles, the data should also be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. The TU Graz RDM policy as well as practical information about RDM in the research cycle can be found here.

FAIR Office Austria

The FAIR Office Austria networks interested persons from research and service institutions to help jointly implement the FAIR principles. The FAIR Office Austria was founded by TU Graz, Vienna University of Technology, and the University of Vienna as part of the FAIR Data Austria project.

Forschungsdatenmanagement-Tools

Supporting Open Science: EOSC Support Office Austria

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), which was launched at the University of Vienna in 2018, makes data services available to researchers across Europe. It was established to help make scientific processes more open and effective and to use research to address current challenges. Since October 2021, the new EOSC Support Office Austria has served as a central contact point in Austria for researchers and institutions who would like to learn how to practically implement Open Science and research data management as part of the EOSC.

If you would like to learn more about this topic or get actively involved, please contact the management chair Ilire Hasani-Mavriqi (Institute for Interactive Systems and Data Science at TU Graz, Head of Research at Digital TU Graz).

"Research is undergoing a fundamental transformation, driven by digitally connected technologies. Researchers now have a wealth of new ways to communicate, network, disseminate, and track the impact of their research. The exponential growth in computing power that can be used for data-driven research is changing the way data can be collected, curated, and analysed. Research activities are now so often conducted digitally that our potential to measure their impact has increased significantly. A great deal of change is taking place right now, but even more can be done to drive this paradigm shift."
