Proof of German Language Competence

German language proficiency at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages is an admission requirement for a degree programme taught in German at TU Graz.

If your proficiency in German has not yet reached the required level C1, then you can register at TU Graz as a non-degree student with German language competence at level A2 until you are able to document German language competence at the required level C1.

Certificates

When you submit your Application for Admission to study at TU Graz, you must include one of the following certificates.

Certificates

You can demonstrate your German language competence at the required level C1 by providing:

  1. Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) (Austrian Language Certificate for German) or
  2. Goethe Certificate or
  3. Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) or
  4. Deutsche Sprachprüfung der Kulturministerkonferenz (DSD) or
  5. Certificate of an University Preparation Programme (Vorstudienlehrgang) at an Austrian University or
  6. Completion of 8 school years at a German-speaking school or
  7. 4 years of German classes at a secondary school (Sekundarstufe II) and a secondary school leaving examination (Reifeprüfung) in the subject German or
  8. Secondary school leaving examination (Reifeprüfung) in German language or
  9. a successfully completed degree programme taught in German.

The language certificates 1 to 4 cannot have been issued more than two years prior to the time of application. You have to present the original documents.

Admission Without German Language Proficiency at level C1

If your proficiency in German has not yet reached the required level C1, then you can register at TU Graz as a non-degree student until you are able to document German language competence at the required level C1. You are required to proof German language proficiency at level A2 or higher at the time when you submit your application.

Certificates

You are required to proof German language proficiency at level A2 or higher. In addition to the types of proof listed further above, we also accept the following certificates:

  1. Österreichische Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) (Austrian Language Certificate for German) or
  2. Goethe Certificate or
  3. Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kulturministerkonferenz (DSD) or
  4. Certificate or course confirmation of language proficiency at level A2 of a University Preparation Programme (Vorstudienlehrgang) at an Austrian University.

The language certificates 1 to 3 cannot have been issued more than two years prior to the time of application. You have to present the original documents.

Please be sure to submit your application together with appropriate proof of your German proficiency.

Procedure

  1. TU Graz gives you a provisional notice of admission which includes, as a condition for completing your admission, the requirement to take the Supplementary Examination in German of the University Preparation Programme Graz.
  2. You bring your notice of admission to the University Preparation Programme Graz and enrol for the course and examination in German there.
  3. You register as a non-degree student at the Registration Office of TU Graz within the general admission period or the additional admission period.
  4. You take the Supplementary Examination in German within the deadline specified in your provisional notice of admission to TU Graz.
  5. When you have passed the Supplementary Examination in German, you then bring the certificate to the TU Graz Registration Office, where you can then complete your admission as a regular student in the degree programme specified in your notice of admission.
