Information Integral Design Studio

Design work on the master’s degree course takes place in the spacious, organisational form of a studio, in which concentrated work that is in line with real practice is possible with others in a close exchange of ideas.
The tasks assigned to the studio range from criteria for the urban landscape, the developed cultural landscape, the region and the city through individual types of buildings, to the details of construction, interpretation and space. Designs for objects and spaces – which have been integrally thought out – are connected with their positions in the ongoing social process of change; that is to say, connected with design suggestions for change through time. The integrating teaching of design thus includes the awareness and reflection of the interdisciplinary, basic principles and interrelationships of architecture’s broader spectrum. The mediation of an integrative understanding of forward-looking ideas and task assignments is based on the principles learned on the bachelor’s degree, both as far as content and creativity are concerned. The integrative teaching with its cross-disciplinary character opens up to the students a forward-looking area of action for practice and theory in the broader field of architecture. The combination of project work and optional subjects that fit in with this contents-wise enable individual students to consolidate their specific specialist area within the context of their studies.

SS18 Aviation Museum Graz

Supervisors: Stefan Peters, Andreas Trummer, Clemens Luser

This year’s Integral Design Studio in SS 2018 is dedicated to the construction of an aviation museum in Graz. The exhibits range from uniforms, ejection seats, engines to aircraft of all sizes. Due to the large number of exhibits, which has increased dramatically since the openeing in 1984, the exhibition space has become noticeably too small. The existing hall, which is 1250m², isn´t large enough.
After the preliminary research and design phase, the focus of the studio will be on the development, analysis and detailing of the roof structure.

WS15/16 Add to build

3D printing methods are changing the processes of fabrication in all industries.  In this processes, digital models are directly connected to the fabricated object.  At the moment the diversity of 3D printing ranges from uses in medical technology to jewellery design and from synthetic materials to sintering of metal.  Besides scale and material, questions about the mechanical properties, such as strength and stiffness, surface quality and the necessity of follow-up treatments arise.  Increasingly, a combination of different materials and the use of diverse injectors and the extensive field of application are in the focus of research.

Elective Subjects
140.802 Material - Structure - Form
140.803 Digital Workflow

WS14 Ceramic Re:Visions

Construction ceramics, such as tiles and bricks, are a material system with long tradition, though only the caly brick has gained importance in the aspect of load-bearing structures. Development in the field of the material itself, precise and flexible production methods as well as integration of digital design tools offer new design and construction possibilities. The studio was an intense collaboration with the Ortweinschule - Keramische Formgebung (School of Ceramic Design) , and supported by Tondach Gleinstätten. Workshops and a factory visit were essential parts of the design process and made the realisation of the prototypes possible.
