Cultural geographer Denis Cosgrove describes landscape as an ‘active agent’, a force that brings nature and culture together as spatial agents. According to Cosgrove, uncovering these interaction processes is the most important challenge for contemporary landscape architecture.
The interesting aspect for us as designers is that landscape can be connecting – i.e. integral – level of consciousness on which the most diverse tasks, realities and dependencies can be discussed and negotiated with regard to form-finding. “Landscape is the thin veneer that connects all and everything.” In the Integral Landscape course we therefore focus on the notion of landscape as a discursive, creative platform. The spectrum of the important cultural insights, projects and ideas presented is therefore broad, so that makes this notion of landscape a sphere of operation for us as designers.
The aim of the course is therefore to ‘map’ the sphere of operation within which we, as designers, recognize connections between social developments and design work and then learn to develop a position and possibilities for our own work. We will examine the possibilities offered by integral thinking and work.

Landscape and Landscape Architecture plays an important role on various levels, ranging from rural to urban contexts, and on many scales from objects to architecture and beyond.
In the curriculum of bachelor architecture students, this compulsory course is planned for the 5th semester. The lecture series "Integral Landscape" in the master program architecture is based on this course. In addition, guests will be invited to speak about specific topics, as well as professional landscape architects who will present their recent projects. Also, a guided excursion is planned to visualize various aspects of landscape projects in public space.
The focus students of this lectures are students of architecture. As a result, the students should be given many reference points and links between landscape, architecture and infrastructure. Landscape Architecture is not considered to be an independent discipline but rather as an integral platform, which is able to address many topics in a situation of blurred boundaries. By introducing the students to a selection of projects, dealing with theoretical aspects, a balanced insight of theory and practice will be given.
