HyStORM – “Hydrogen Storage via Oxidation and Reduction of Metals”

Iron-based oxygen carrier materials show the ability for hydrogen production according to the principle of Chemical Looping processes. The implementation of this method in fixed-bed systems enables the inherent storage of a chemical bond potential for hydrogen generation and the direct release of a pressurized hydrogen stream in decentralized systems.

The principle for pressurized hydrogen release from bio-based feedstocks with up to 100 bar was successfully demonstrated in lab-scale. Furthermore, the process enables inherent sequestration of a pure carbon dioxide stream for CCS and CCU applications, which was successfully demonstrated in the HyStORM project. High efforts were undertaken to simultaneously discharge high-pressure hydrogen while at the same time separate a pure CO2 stream during reduction phase.
