Nanofibres are used in fuel cell applications due to their large surface area and porosity. In this review, the current strategies for the fabrication of aligned nanofibres are presented and different methods to obtain targeted arrangements are investigated. These methods include increasing the speed of the rotating collector, applying multiple electric fields and using engineered collectors, e.g. wiring drums, patterned strips, frame shapes, rotating discs, rotating nozzles and guiding pillar arrays. It also explains why this structure can improve fuel cell performance, e.g. through increased conductivity, improved mass transport, structural durability and reduced water flooding.
