Jenny Schrödl (Freie Universität Berlin): “Feminism & Performance Art”

Abstract: The focus of the article is interference between feminist theory and performance art. On the basis of different paradigms in both fields – paradigms such as female authorship and agency, female images and gender stereotypes, gender as a performative construction, or sex from an intersectional perspective, from the 1970s to the present - interfaces between feminist theory formation and feminist performance art will be looked at in detail. These interfaces also speak to the relationship between performativity (as a theoretical-academic discourse) and performance art (as a practical-aesthetic art form). Last but not least, it will be necessary to ask why and for what reason feminism is still important - or should be - in practice and theory alike.
