The Institute of Architectural Theory, History of Art and Cultural Studies invites you to the second research lab in a series of events addressing the work of Ferdinand Schuster (1920 – 1972). Beginning in the 1950s, Schuster was one of the leading thinkers of modern architecture in Styria. In his theoretical reflections on architecture he considered the cultural, social, and political dimensions of building. As of 1964 Schuster was Chair of Architecture and Design at the Technical College of Graz, and as such was also a teacher to an entire generation of Graz architecture students.

Research Lab #2 is dedicated to the sacred buildings in Schuster’s work. With his church designs, Ferdinand Schuster made an important contribution to Styrian modernism from the 1950s to the 1970s. The cityscape of Kapfenberg is still characterized by Schuster’s churches, as in the districts of Walftersam and Schirmitzbühel. In the spirit of the Second Vatican Council, in his later work Schuster also included sacred multipurpose rooms – thus setting his churches in diametric opposition to classical church design. The best known example thereof is the Pastoral Care Centre St. Paul-Eisteichsiedlung in Graz (1971). During the research lab, researchers from various disciplines will present their views on Ferdinand Schuster’s sacred works and initiate a broader discussion on the topic.
