KUŞDILI ÇAYIRI. The Formation of a New interpreted Turkish Housing

Hanife Tepegöz

This thesis deals with the matter of the turkish residential building. The research of the turkish residential culture goes far back to the nomadic period of the Turks until the situation of today. In my design „community Living“ is a fundamental topic and the project is located in Istanbul in Kadiköy (on the asian side of Istanbul). The design’s purpose is to combine architectural quality with high flexibility and create a attractive and pleasant atmosphere. The goal is to achieve an interplay between communality and individuality. The Architecture should encourage the communication or also the social exchange between the generations (e.g. students, graduates, families, freelancer and seniors). Further the neighbourhood network should be reinforced and thus enhance the feeling of beeing a community. My idea is therefore to create a new interpretation of the turkish housing: „ A communal residence for the future, inspired by the traditional turkish residence but which should be a pioneering building that supports the development of an attractive atmosphere for living, studying and social and cultural exchange.“ The building tradition should serve as base for an innovative concept to create an optimal living space for future habitants. As the city with the highest population density of Turkey the residential issue has always been an important topic in Istanbul. Especially since the last 30 years the rapid expanding industrialisation and economy as well as the strong migration have caused unplaned growing urbanisations and a lack on infrastructure of the city by which more comlications were created. Searching for better employment opportunities, an easier life ort he dream of prosperity many people move to the city. Today over 14 million people officially populate a city area of 5.461 km², which equals about a density of 2.633 habitants per square kilometer. Due to estimates Istanbul has approximately 15 million inhabitants and thereby belongs to the 10 most populous metropoles of the world, the so-called Megacities. Due to the high quantity of relics of the various architectural eras, of the period of the Greeks, the Byzantines, the Ottomans and the Turks the historical city of Istanbul has been announced 1986 to an UNESCO World Heritage. The master thesis KUŞDILI ÇAYIRI. The Formation of a New interpreted Turkish Housing was supervised by Andreas Lichtblau (Institute of Housing).
